The word “Chiropractic” is derived from the Greek words “cheir” (hand) and “praktos” (done) combined to mean “done by hand.” It was chosen by the developer of chiropractic care, Daniel David Palmer. In 1895, D.D. Palmer performed a chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard, who later reported that his hearing had improved due to the change.

D.D. Palmer opened the first chiropractic school two years later, and in the century since, chiropractic professionals have used spinal adjustments to help people prevent and cope with back pain, carpal tunnel, muscle strain, headaches and migraines, and a variety of other physical ailments. Millions of people benefit from the work of Dr. Palmer today.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, management and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health.

Chiropractors can help patients with a range of issues, including:

What to expect:

Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks.

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care

During the corrective care phase, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, thereby helping prevent injury. It is typical to need care 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed, it is important to come in for periodic adjustments to avoid problems in the future. Usually, this only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.

Your First Visit

New Client Online Health History Forms - Required

CBD Health Plus offers clients form(s) online so they can be completed in the convenience of your own home or office. Alternatively these forms can be filled out upon entering our clinic preferably 10 minutes before your appointment. This paperwork provides us with your health history and information on your condition.

Next, you will have a consultation with Dr. Louise to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, and potential treatment options. This initial visit is designed for Dr. Louise to learn more about you, your condition, and expectations to determine how chiropractic care can meet your goals.

After your consultation, Dr. Louise will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes and flexibility. Other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical tests will be performed as well. However, nothing will be done in our clinic without your consent.

Report of Findings

Once the information is collected and examinations are performed, Dr. Louise will give you a detailed report of all findings and answer any questions including:

1. How can you help me?
2. How often do I need to come in?
3. What will my treatment cost?
4. After reviewing your health history, goals, and examining your spine and x-rays, Dr. Louise will discuss recommendations and notify you if your condition requires care with other providers. Dr. Louise will provide the best treatment and care program for your needs.

At the conclusion of this initial appointment, you can choose to experience your first treatment. This may include manual spinal adjusting, diversified technique, gonstead, activator, applied kinesiology, Dry Needling Therapy and Multi Radiance Laser Therapy. Treatment is interactive, so you can express concerns about the different styles of treatment anytime.

Care Program

Prior to leaving, the doctor will suggest a care program to incorporate outside of treatment. If you are in pain when you first come into our clinic this may include: ice or heat application instructions, certain activities or positions to avoid, and at home exercises and/or stretches. If you desire, she will work with you to create healthy habits and routines for your lifestyle. Every person is unique, therefore everyone requires a customised care plan. The purpose of the care program is for you to achieve good spinal alignment, have a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive mental state.

In addition, she may also offer information on products such as sleeping pillows, rock-tape and Metagenics supplements to best support your needs.

We take great pride in providing the finest chiropractic care for our clients.

Below is a sampling of the different chiropractic techniques we offer at CBD Health Plus.

*Manual Adjusting * Diversified * Gonstead * Activator * Applied Kinesiology * Dry Needling Therapy * Multi Radiance Laser Therapy.

Manual Adjusting

Manual adjustment is a procedure used by chiropractors that utilises controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude and velocity, which is applied to specific joints and adjacent tissues. Chiropractors commonly use such procedures to influence joint and neurophysiological function.

This technique is the most commonly used of all chiropractic techniques and is the one probably most familiar to clients. The Diversified adjustment entails a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust that usually results in a cavitation of a joint (quick, shallow thrusts that cause the popping noise often associated with a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment). Its objective is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.

This is a variation of the Diversified technique that uses a special table with several segments called drop pieces. These segments can be cocked up a fraction of an inch, so when the thrust is delivered, the table will drop this fraction of an inch. The object of the drop is to distract (open) the joint during the adjustment. The drop pieces assists the thrust, while minimising the force required for the adjustment.

Activator Method

This is a hand-held instrument-based adjustment protocol. It involves having the patient lie in a prone position and comparing the functional leg lengths. Often one leg will seem to be shorter than the other. The chiropractor then carries out a series of muscle tests such as having the patient move their arms in a certain position in order to activate the muscles attached to specific vertebrae. If the leg lengths are not the same, that is taken as a sign that the problem is located at that vertebra.

Gonstead Chiropractic

The Gonstead technique is named after it's developer, Dr Clarence Gonstead. The methodology originated from his engineering background.

His “foundation principle” explains how a subluxation pattern in one area of the spine can produce compensatory changes in another.

The Nervoscope gadget utilises two tests to identify minute contrasts in temperature all over your spine. The best and most appropriate chiropractic care is performed after completing a thorough assessment and incorporating a full X-ray as well as considering your heath history.

Applied Kinesiology

Kinesiology works by unblocking the stresses in our meridian systems that prevent smooth energetic transmission. These blockages affect the functioning of our bio-systems, resulting in changes in energy. Muscle monitoring involves challenging the bio-feedback mechanism present in all muscles to reveal imbalances within the body. The ‘read out” or findings may present as physical pain, mental discomfort, and dis-integration of our bodies. These can include allergies, depression, postural problems, poor performance levels, learning and relationship difficulties, digestive, reproductive, nervous disorders and many more. If there is problem in our physical bodies, this is our system’s way of telling us that it is malfunctioning.

The goal of any kinesiology balance is to identify the bottom line cause of any imbalance and then resolve it. It may be nutritional, emotional, structural, psychological, hormonal, mental, energetic or spiritual.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a treatment technique whereby a clean, single-use, fine fibre (acupuncture needle) is embedded into the irritated muscle. Dry needling should not hurt. The client might sometimes feel a twitch or a slight cramp for a couple of seconds which is a desirable reaction for dry needling. Dry needling can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal problems. Neuromuscular dysfunction and imbalances are thought to be a primary contributing factor to the symptoms. Some of the common areas treated are neck, back and shoulder pain, forearm pain (tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow),tension-type headaches, buttock pain and leg pain (sciatica, hamstrings strains, calf tightness/spasms). The treatment of muscles has a great effect of reducing pain.

Laser Light Therapy

This is a non-invasive, non-toxic, low level laser therapy that has been scientifically proven to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, reduce swelling, and accelerate the healing process while strengthening damaged tissue. The treatment will work on your body at a cellular level to transform damaged cells and increase energy production. This therapy has demonstrated success with issues such as bursitis, whiplash, migraine, temporomandibular dysfunction, tennis elbow, sprains, strains, frozen shoulder, arthritis, shin splints, rotator cuff pain, groin injuries, heal spur, tendonitis, muscle spasm, disc herniation and bulges.

FAQs - Chiropractic – Commonly Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic? Chiropractic helps correct any misalignments (or subluxations) to allow your body to work better. Typically, the most common problems here at CBD Health Plus are back pain, neck pain, back stiffness, headaches, migraines, and posture problems. We find that more people are coming in for general back checks and spinal assessments.

How often will I need to come? This will vary with each person, depending on how long you have had the problem, your previous health history, any trauma or accidents and many other factors. After a chiropractor has done an assessment to see if Chiropractic may be able to help you, they will be able to tell you how frequently you need to have care. It may be starting with 2 or 3 visits a week initially, or less frequently depending on the above factors.

Does getting adjusted hurt? No, getting adjusted should not hurt. More often than not you will actually feel an instant release of pressure. Any discomfort after an adjustment would be similar to what you might feel in your muscles after a workout at the gym.

What is the clicking or cracking sound? The noise that you may hear when you get adjusted is a suction sound as nitrogen gas within the joint escapes. The adjustment does not aim to release the gas, it is merely a side effect of little to no clinical consequence. Some adjustments don’t make any noise at all. It is good to know that the click you may hear is not the bone itself.

Are adjustments safe? When we look at Adjustments against other Medical Interventions they are incredibly safe. Chiropractors are fortunate enough to have one of the lowest malpractice insurance premiums because of low numbers of litigations against the profession. However, there are always risks associated with any procedure. We minimise the risk through our thorough history, examination and testing as well as using specific gentle techniques. We will always discuss any risks with you before proceeding with care. No two cases are the same, therefore we taylor our approach to make sure we deliver to best Chiropractic care that is safe and effective.

Once you start chiropractic care, do you have to keep going back? You always get to decide whether you want to continue with the benefits of Chiropractic care. Many people chose to continue to get adjusted as they enjoy the ongoing benefits of a living a pain free life, as well as a healthy spine and nervous system. We will always give you our best advice with your care, based on your goals and what your specific objective results show.

Pregnancy… Before, During and After? Before Pregnancy Gentle Chiropractic adjustments before pregnancy will help to balance and support the pelvis.

During Pregnancy Later in pregnancy, ligaments start to slacken to prepare for the birthing process - a combination of a larger tummy, increased weight, changing posture and softening ligaments can all cause lower back and pelvic instability, furthermore misalignments to spinal vertebra and the pelvis. This creates pressure on the nerves and irritation to the spinal joints. Using muscle releases, gentle manipulation and mobilisations, Chiropractic care will help to ease the pressure on nerves, restore normal function to the body and reduce discomfort.

After Pregnancy Generally for a quicker recovery, it is very important to be structurally balanced. Many ladies suffering the painful effects of symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) may gain great relief from Chiropractic care post pregnancy. Each case is different but we can only suggest a check up is booked in 6 weeks after the child is born.

Paediatrics….. what about the baby? Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked for the spinal biomechanical problems.
Dr Louise has additional expertise in very gentle paediatric cranial therapy.

Can I bring my child for Chiropractic Care? Yes! Children can experience many benefits from chiropractic care. Children are very active in sports and in everyday life. As a result, they may experience injuries that may cause symptoms of back or neck pain, soreness, stiffness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is gentle and a drug free way to address your child’s aches and pains.

The Elderly Chiropractic care is great for the elderly for many reasons including maintaining a healthy nervous system, improving flexibility and creating greater range of movement into stiffening, arthritic or degenerating joints.

Occupational Stress Whether you are a builder, banker or accountant, most of our professions will place our body under stress and for the modern day worker it will usually be sitting too long! It is very important to somehow reverse the negative forces we place on our bodies daily and this involves specific home exercises (stretches and strengthening), correct diet (fuel and repair), Chiropractic adjustments (reduce nerve pressure and promotes healing) but also adequate rest and relaxation (repair and de-stress). Imagine a book keeper hunched at a computer all day or a brick layer using the same hand and the same posture all day. If these trades do not look after themselves properly then eventually something will give, slip, bulge or rupture and this creates crisis care.

What is the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy? Physiotherapists are generally hospital trained and specialise in post-surgical rehabilitation as well as Sports Injuries. When it comes to the spine they are generally focussed on muscles and strength. Chiropractors on the other hand specialise in the spine and nervous system and are generally trained in private practice. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments to correct the spine as well as strength and postural work.

Do I need a referral to come to CBD Health Plus Chiropractic? No you definitely don’t need a referral. Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, which means you can attend without the need to see your Doctor.
